Please read the scenario below and select the appropriate answers from the options. You must

Ashley Jefferson is a 38year-old female visiting the Health Clinic to seek help. Ashley works as a hotel
manager, and she has three children two of which are teenagers. Ashley is living with her boyfriend and
the father of her last child. She informed the nurse that she is recovering from a panic attack. She also
told the nurse that she feels embarrassed by the situation.

1. Which response is appropriate for the nurse to make?
a. Everyone gets embarrassed by things from time to time.
b. You have nothing to feel embarrassed about.
c. Have you experienced anything like this before?
d. Have you considered seeing a therapist to assist you with your anxiety?

I believe answer choice A is incorrect, because that is just a general blanket statement
that does not provide any therapeutic communication between the client and nurse,
and really does not mean anything in the long run. It is more of a false reassurance, it is
trivializing the client’s feelings.
Answer B is incorrect as well because it is a false assurance. The nurse is once again
trivializing the client’s feelings by saying they are invalid and the client should not feel
the way they do, making the client feel insecure and wrong for feeling that way.
I believe answer choice C is the correct response from the nurse. I think this answer is
the best because it allows for the nurse to gain some history on the patient and this
problem, for example if the panic attack is reoccurring. This established the most
therapeutic connection between nurse and client, demonstrating genuine care for the
client because they are asking if this is not only a problem of the “here and now” but
possibly reoccurring.
I believe answer choice D is incorrect because it closes off the bridge of communication
between the nurse and client by pushing the client to a different professional, making it
seem as the nurse is unwilling to help or does not care about the client. It can be
considered a leading question, which is an interview trap.

2. During the conversation, Ashley tells the nurse that she is feeling very stressed
and overwhelmed. Which response should the nurse make?
a. You hide it well. You do not appear stressed to me.
b. Why do you think you have so much stress in your life?
c. Tell me more about the stress you are feeling.
d. Your stress will get better once you are out of the hospital.

I knew the answer was not D because D is an interview trap, false reassuring.
