Strofe 1 Strofe 1
The father's influence
Versreël 1: “Ag Pa” laat die spreker still bothers the boy, he often thinks about his expectations for his life and the boy is
as moedeloos voorkom. Laat die discouraged from being reminded of it all the time.
spreker as moedeloos voorkom.
• “jy raas so” en “jy skaaf so” – herhaling.
• The father is in the "coffin", he has died, but he is "noisy". Perhaps the father is restless
and/or dissatisfied.
• "You're raging like that" and "You're chafing like that" – repetition. The speaker leaves the
recurring cycle of the father's admonition.
In line 3, there is the image of the father doing woodworking. He scrapes on a knot. A knot in this context made of wood is a hard, dark
spot in the wood. In English, we call it a knot. What do you think is its symbolism? The father wants to polish the brush. That means he
wants to take it away – he wants to smooth it out. He's still influencing his son
