Field Observations
1. Sitting at the Olive Garden celebrating my boyfriend’s birthday. When you walk into the
restaurant you are greeted by the hostess and an Informal Norm you naturally do is say
Hello to them and give them the number in your party. Some of the other Typical
Informal Norms are ordering your drink and food in a certain order depending on the
server and the amount of people in your party. During this experience it was with my
boyfriend and his friends. When our food arrived, we would use the natural instinct of
using forks and spoons and knives for what we ordered. Since I didn’t know many of my
boyfriend’s friends I spoke with them and explained my Achieved Status of my high
school diploma and working on my college diploma for now. In my family home when I
arrive home one of the most common Symbols that Filipino’s do is when they greet their
elders or parents they will take their hand and bring it up to the younger person’s
forehead as a sign of respect and hello. It’s a natural respectful gesture that I do with my
mom, grand ma, and anyone else in the Filipino Culture. One of the most asked questions
that I am asked from new people is do I speak my mom’s Language. I answer no, I did
try my best to learn from my mom, but I know even if I don’t know that language I know
the culture and I do my best to enjoy that culture and teach it on to my children later on.
2. While going to College of Southern Nevada you will notice that students will walk in
groups that follow their culture, or major that they take. I notice that there is a lot of
