Titration experiment - PASS

DURING THE TITRATION EXPERIMENT I HAD TO WEAR
A SAFETY LAB COAT. WEARING A SAFETY LAB COAT
PROTECTS YOY FROM ANY ACID SPILLING ONTO YOUR
CLOTHES AND/OR BODY. THE LAB COAT IS MADE
FROM THICK COTTON BECAUSE THE MATERIAL IS
LIGHTWEIGHT, COMFOTABLE AND DURABLE. THE
MATERIAL IS ALSO FLAME RESISTANT. THE THICK
COTTON PREVENTS ANY ACIDS FROM GOING
THROUGH THE COTTON ONTO THE STUDENTS SKIN.

GLOVES MUST BE WORN DURING TITRATION
EXPERIMENT; THIS IS TO PREVENT THE ACID
FROM BURNING THE SKIN. THE GLOVES ARE
MADE FROM LATEX WHICH IS A ELASTIC
MATERIAL AND DURABLE. THE ACID WILL NOT
BURN THROUGH THE GLOVES.

DURING THE EXPERIMENT, IT IS ALSO VITAL TO WEAR
GOGGLES. GOGGLES PREVENT FROM ACID SPLASHING
INTO THE EYE WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS EYE
INJURIES, EVEN BLINDESS. THE GOGGLES ARE MADE FROM
POLYCARBONATE MATERIAL WHICH IS SCRATCH
RESISTANT AND A HARD MATERIAL SO THE ACID CANNOT
BURN THTOUGH IT.

Safe working practices in the laboratory

Lab design:

In a laboratory, health and safety issues should always be priority. The safety in the laboratory relies
on the lab layout. Desks and meeting/ refreshment areas must be divided away from the
workspaces, these can be distinguished by using different types of flooring according to the lab.

In the laboratory it is vital to have the right amount of furniture, for example the storage for
chemicals but be secure and strong, there must be enough sinks, the emergency equipment must be
easy to access, and the laboratory must have ventilation systems that cope with odours and fumes.

Safe working practices:

The second nature to workers and staff in a laboratory is standard safe working practices. All the
staff must know the hazards that are at risk and they may face, they must always be aware that they
need the personal protective equipment. The staff also must be aware of facilities that reduce the
risks, for example safety showers and eyewash stations, and make sure they are trained to know
how to use them and where.

COSHH, regulations and legislations MERIT

COSHH is a law put into place for employers to control substances that are hazardous to health. To
reduce the risk of the workers being exposed to hazardous substances, the employers can reduce
the risk by:

 Make a list of all possible health hazards
 Brainstorm ideas of how to prevent/reduce harm to health
 Provide control measures to reduce harm to health + make sure that they are used
 Making sure that all control measures are kept in good working order
 Provide employees with good information, instructions and training
 Provide monitoring and health surveillance in appropriate cases
 Plan for emergencies

In a scientific workplace, regulations and legislations must be put into place to keep the workers
safe. In a laboratory where there are no regulations or legislations that are being followed the
chances of accidents occurring and the workers health being harmed are at a high risk, in some cases
the accident could cause death.

A worker called Sheri Sangji passed away in her laboratory because the regulations were not being
followed in the laboratory. Sheri was performing an experiment which involves tert-Butyllithium
which is highly flammable and caused Sheri to be caught on fire, the fire resulted in her getting
severe burns which caused her death after her organs began to shut down. After Sheri passed away
the California workplace safety investigators said that Sheri Sangji was ‘a young, inexperienced
woman who was permitted to undertake a dangerous experiment alone’.
