Whilst thinking about my reading experience, I have to think a few years back in
time. My parents always read to me and my sister when we were younger and we
started reading at the age of 7. It was difficult and I had trouble keeping up the
class's pace. My sister and I personally loved the books from Dick Laan, especially
the Pinkeltje series. During those years, we were exposed to all kinds of books
from children’s books to young adult books. During my teenage years, I am not
able to recall having to read any books for school. Nevertheless, my sister and I
bought the Tina books, which is originally a magazine yet in the summers they had
made special books to read on holiday. Reading has always been part of my life, I
do not take enough time to read yet in holidays my suitcase is packed with enough
amount of books to read. Although I had trouble reading, my parents were very
supportive and I had extra lessons at school. When I was 11/12 years old, I was
able to tutor some children from lower grades myself. It was really rewarding to
see their development throughout the weeks. I was not fond of reading Dutch
books and quite quickly I read some English books in which my interest was
laying. Especially history books, I still love to read about historical events or just
romantic fantasy novels. My aunt was taught at an international school and
followed an English translation program. She was the one who got me interested in
reading English books, I am not sure which book was the first one yet my
bookshelves are already full with a great addition of typical English literature like
Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, etc. I am curious to read more books of other
literary themes and find out if I can be amazed by the themes.
