AQA A LEVEL BIOLOGY CHAPTER 1
How do you know if something is a carb by its name? - ANS- OSE, for example sucrose
What are polymers made up of? - ANS- chains of monomers, eg amino acid sequences
What do all carbohydrates contain? - ANS- Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen
Examples of the monsaccharides that make up the carbohydrate - ANS- glucose,
fructose and sucrose (Good Fuking Saturday)
What type of sugar is glucose? - ANS- glucose is a hexosugar made with six carbon
atoms
What are alpha and beta glucose? - ANS- Isomers
The structure of alpha glucose - ANS-
The structure of beta glucose - ANS-
How is a disaccharide formed? - ANS- by a condensation forming glycosidic bonds
between two monosaccharides
How is sucrose produced? - ANS- glucose + fructose (girls fancy sam)
How is lactose produced? - ANS- glucose + galatose (gay guys laugh)
How is maltose produced? - ANS- glucose + glucose (girls get mad)
What is the benedicts test used for? - ANS- it tests for sugar (reducing and non
reducing)
How to do the benedicts test - ANS- Add Benedicts Reagent to your sample, heat in a
bath until at the boil, will form a brick red precipitate
How to test for non-reducing sugars? - ANS- add dilute hydrochloric acid and boil,
neutralise it with sodium hydrogencarbonate and complete the benedicts test as normal
What is a polysaccharide? - ANS- mnay monosaccs joined together
