CHAPTER 2- REVIEW QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Elements - ANS-Pure substance, composed of only one type of atom
Compound - ANS-Substance whose molecules have more than one kind of elements in them
Atom - ANS-Smallest particle of a pure substance (element) that still has a chemical properties of that
substance; composed of protons, electrons, and neutrons (subatomic particles)
Molecule - ANS-Particle of matter composed of one or more smaller units called atoms.
Name and define three kinds of particles within an atom. - ANS-1. Protons - positive charged particle in
nucleus
2.Electrons - negative charged particle
3. Neutrons- noncharged particle in nucleus
What is an energy level? - ANS-Limited region surrounding the nucleus of an atom at a certain distance
containing electrons; also called a shell
What is the chemical bond? - ANS-Chemical bonds form to make atoms more stable.
What are major types of chemical bond? - ANS-Covalent and ionic
What is an electrolyte? - ANS-Molecule that dissociates (breaks apart) in water to form individual ions;
an ionic bonds.
What is an ion? - ANS-Electrically charged atom or group of atoms
Organic compound - ANS-Compound whose large molecules contain carbon and that include C-C bonds
and/or C-H bonds
Inorganic compound - ANS-Compound whose molecules do not contain C-C or C-H bonds
What is solvent? - ANS-Substance in which other substances are dissolved; for example, in saltwater, the
water is the solvent for salt.
What is solute? - ANS-Substance that dissolves into another substance; for example, in saltwater the salt
is the solute dissolved in water.
