Pyoderma
Type Sub-type Description Treatment/Therapy
Surface Acute moist dermatitis Most commonly occur in flea allergy - cleaning
Pyoderma (Pyotrauatic dermatitis, hot - Astringents, topical, or systemic
spots) May also involve deeper infection - biopsy if in anti-inflammatory drugs
doubt - Flea control
Only the Skin fold Pyoderma Associated with irritation and lack of ventilation Acute cases:
outermost layers (intertrigo) caused by skin folds - Astringents + topical
of the skin glucocorticoid
- Shampoos, gel or ointment w/
Benzoyl peroxide, sulfur and
salicylic acid
Long term treatment:
- Weight loss
- Surgery to eliminate skin folds
Usually resolved Mucocutaneous pyoderma Involves the entire lips and adjacent skin Same treatment as Interigo but systemic
with minimal antibiotics are more commonly necessary
antibacterial Histologically same as lip fold pyoderma - may ← ulceration leading to deeper infections
therapy occur concurrently
Superficial Impetigo (Puppy pyoderma) Occurs in young dogs prior to or during pubertal May resolve spontaneously
Pyoderma changes
Topical antibacterial shampoos
Deficiencies in management + intercurrent
disease → underlying causes (but can also have
no predisposition
Characterized by formation of pustules in the
epidermis
Superficial folliculitis Occurs secondary to other conditions - Systemic antibiotics + superficial
demodicosis, allergy, hyperthyroidism and lack of antibacterial or anti-seborrheic shampoos
hygiene/poor management. Specific therapy depends on underlying
Infection located in the hair follicles factors
