King Phillip's War - ANSWER War between the Native American tribes of
New England and British colonists that took place from 1675-1676. The war
was the result of tension caused by encroaching white settlers. The chief of the
Wampanoags, King Philip lead the natives. The war ended Indian resistance in
New England and left a hatred of whites.

Encomienda - ANSWER Labor system created by Spain which allowed
Spanish settlers in the Americas to control the lands AND people of a certain
territory, in turn the Spanish had to pay the natives and teach them Catholicism.
The system was intended to help the natives from exploitation, but the system
itself turned into a coercive labor system.

Enlightenment - ANSWER A movement of ideas that occurred in Europe
between 1680 and 1790. Attempted to apply reason to understand, explain and
even change the world.

John Locke - ANSWER English philosopher who advocated the idea of a
"social contract" in which government powers are derived from the consent of
the governed and in which the government serves the people; also said people
have natural rights to life, liberty and property.

Mercantilism - ANSWER Economic philosophy of 17th and 18th century
European nations; sought to increase wealth and power through acquisition of
gold and silver and establishing a favorable balance of trade. Colonies served
interest of mother country through importation of its raw materials ->
Exportation > importation

John Adams - ANSWER A Massachusetts attorney and politician who was a
strong believer in colonial independence. He argued against the Stamp Act and
was involved in various patriot groups. As a delegate from Massachusetts, he
urged the Second Continental Congress to declare independence. He helped
draft and pass the Declaration of Independence. Adams later served as the
second President of the United States.
