Unit 4a: Laboratory Techniques and their Application

Issue date: 18/05/2022

Deadline: 01/05/2022

Introduction:

For this assignment we have to focus on two departments within an organisation and what various
health and safety techniques are put in place to minimise risks and hazards and how they maximize
safety within these departments.

My organisation of choice is a nursing home within the UK, located in Sidcup, London. called “St
Aubyns Nursing Home”, which I am currently employed with. I chose this because I have first hand
experience working in two different departments within the nursing home and the various health
and safety techniques that are used within those departments and the workplace as a whole.

I currently work at St Aubyn’s Nursing Home as a cleaner but previously I worked as a kitchen
assistant and both have strict health and safety regulations as they are two roles where cleanliness is
very important. These are the two departments I'll be focusing on in this assignment.

I’ll also be talking about how covid-19 had affected the nursing home and the different personal
protective procedures we had to employ to keep ourselves and the residents safe within the nursing
home.

What are the main activities within the organisation?

St Aubyn’s Nursing Home’s primary function is to house and care for elderly people who require
specialist care for diseases and disorders that they may be facing at their elderly age.

Specialist care at St Aubyns Nursing home includes care for:

 Cancer
 Epilepsy
 Hearing Impairment
 Multiple Sclerosis
 Parkinson's Disease
 Speech Impairment
 Strokes
 Visual Impairment

(referenced from the nursing home’s listing on carehome.co.uk)

The nursing home includes multiple different departments to take care of the home and its
residents, these include the kitchen, cleaners, carers, nurses, managers and handyman

The two departments that I'll be focusing on will be the kitchen and the cleaning department as I
have worked in both and have valuable experience with both departments and their health and
safety procedures.

Everyone in the nursing home has to wear face masks at all times.
