African American culture has had a difficult relationship with the criminal justice system, largely due to incidents of police brutality and shootings involving white officers and black individuals. This has led to a significant mistrust of law enforcement within the African American community. Misunderstandings often stem from religious beliefs. For instance, since 9/11, Muslims have faced prejudice and are often unfairly labeled as terrorists. Similarly, Jewish people have historically faced discrimination for practicing Judaism. To improve relations, law enforcement could engage in community meetings to discuss backgrounds and concerns. This can build trust, foster understanding, and encourage participation in community events, helping to bridge the gap between police and the public.

The culture group I chose to write about is African Americans. African American culture
has a huge reputation for having bad encounters with any type of criminal justice professions.
One common complaint among African Americans is that they do not feel comfortable in the
presence of a police officer. For example, African American feel this way as a result of multiple
incidents of police brutality and shootings involving a white law enforcement officer and a black
male or female. Racial disparities in views of the criminal justice system extend beyond the
perceived fairness of the system overall. According to statistics the NAACP examined, although
black people make up 13.4 percent of the population, they make up 22 percent of fatal police
shootings, 47 percent of wrongful conviction exonerations, and 35 percent of individuals
executed by the death penalty (Inman).

Misunderstandings
Religion/Beliefs:
As we all know, misunderstandings happen almost every day in the criminal justice
system. One of them most common misunderstandings is someone's religion and beliefs.
Religious discrimination is defined as treating a person or group differently because of their
religious views. For example, ever since 9/11, anyone whose religion is Islamic get so much hate
from the society because people believed that they are terrorists. Another example is that if you
wore the Star of David from the early 1900s, you would also be treated differently. Jewish people
also had so much hate from the society just because they practice Judaism.

Professional Practices
Professional Practices: Understanding the public

Description of Practice: If law enforcement officers and members of the community could meet
and discuss each other's backgrounds, cultures, as well as other valuable information; this would
be the first step to help reconcile the relationship.

Possible Outcomes:
-Can build trust to help keep the community safe
-Help each other to understand one another and each other issues
-Engage law enforcement to attend and participate in community events/ activities to build
relations with the community
