EDUB: Reflective Journal - Unit 1
Ashlee Bell 2023613207

Question 1:
Q: What did you learn that you did not know?

In this unit, I learnt a lot of new things including learning about many
important people that aided in the development of the education system
and the wellbeing of the learners in the education system. Something I did
not know that I learnt in this unit was about John Rawls and his work in
society. My favourite concept of John Rawl’s is the ‘Veil of ignorance’
which is the idea that the social world and its contingencies should not
affect you; the ‘veil’ should shield you from these contingencies so that
you are able to treat the learners fairly and justly, as a teacher. I also
learnt that there is a difference between equality and equity and that
these 2 concepts act like links of a chain that interlink and affect each
other. Equality is a concept based on equal treatment whereas Equity is a
concept based on equal opportunities, therefore, these 2 concepts are
linked as when you provide equal opportunities for all (equity), you are
practicing equal treatment of all (equality).

Question 2:
Q: To what extent does the learning unit’s content help you think
differently as a future teacher about working in the school
context?

This leaning unit’s content helped me think differently as a teacher in the
school context as it opened my eyes to the fact that when learners have
unequal opportunities and backgrounds, they will have differential
outcomes and now knowing this, I will be able to change my approach as
a teacher when handling students to ensure that regardless of their
backgrounds, I will try to provide them with equal opportunities and tools
to close the inequality gap between learners. In tis unit, I also learnt about
the effects of gangsterism on the education system and that the learning
is put under pressure, and therefore, going forward as a teacher, I will
prioritise getting through all the content with the learners, while creating
a safe and positive space where learners are able to focus and succeed
without feeling endangered.

Question 3:
Q: What questions do you still have about this learning unit?

I would like more information on how, as a teacher, you would deal with
gangsterism in school without putting pressure on the content schedule
while ensuring that there is no violence in the classroom. Another
question I have is, how would you create equal opportunities for learners
in the class but then ensure that when they go home to unequal
households where there could be violence, they do not fall back into an
unequal mindset.
