• Graphophonemics
This is about the link between letters and the sounds they make. It helps
us sound out words when we read. For example, the letters "ch" in "chair"
make the /ch/ sound.
• Syntax
Syntax is about how words are put together to make sentences that make
sense. It’s like knowing the rules of word order. For example, "The dog
barked loudly" makes sense, but "Barked dog the loudly" does not.
• Semantics
Semantics is about understanding the meaning of words and sentences. It
helps us know what the text is saying. For example, the word "bat" could
mean a flying animal or a stick for hitting a ball, and we figure out the
meaning based on the sentence.
• Pragmatics
Pragmatics is about how we understand language in real-life situations. It’s
like reading between the lines. For example, if someone says, "It’s cold in
here," they might really mean, "Please close the window."
(8 marks)
2. Read the poem below and answer the questions based on the poem:
"Motho Ke Motho Ka Batho Babang (A Person Is a Person Because of Other
People)", Jeremy Cronin
