Provide a clear exposition, grounded in the text, of the your views on the four issues above (i.e. aims and purposes of education, what should be taught in school, instructional methods, and the teacher/student relationship) State and defend your own position regarding the views discussed, giving evidence for why you hold your opinion. The goal of the paper is for you to synthesize the material from the course and create your own philosophical position on education today. Therefore, although you reflect on the material we have been studying, it is not enough to simply restate positions such as Perennialist, Essentialist, etc...

Introduction

Just like every aspect of human life, education has been undergoing metamorphosis since

its inception. One of the landmarks of this revolution was the progressivism educational theory, a

major shift from previously held philosophical views and educational practices. This paper will

entail a great deal of synthesizing the progressivism educational theory as a whole while

providing personal opinions and perspectives. We will talk about the aims and purpose of

education, the content that should be taught in school, instructional methods that should be

employed and finish off with teacher/student relationship.

Aims and Purpose of education

Progressivism views education through the ‘progress’ lenses. This is to mean that education

should not be static but undertaken in a way that fits the changing dynamics of the society.

Unlike in previous eras where scores were used to measure education achievement,

progressivism brings out new light into this. Some of the aims and purposes of education include

but not limited to.

 Encourage and improve critical thinking. For a very long time, education had all been

about rote learning and cramming of concepts. This only resulted in regurgitation of

information meaning that there was little to no progress in advancing education. I believe

that understanding of concepts should be one of the aims and purposes of education. This

will encourage transfer of knowledge, where a concept in a different discipline can be

applied to another discipline giving rise to new and hybrid information.
