I personally believe that people perceive others too harshly. I think that there are a lot of
stigmas that are unfair, especially on a college campus. I always give people the benefit of the
doubt because I am aware that stigmas aren’t always true. I always use the phrase “don’t judge
a book by its cover”. I think that in life it is important to give everyone a chance because that is
what you would want others to do for you. Some external factors that have shifted my
perception on someone is how they treat others. For example, if I know that you treated a
friend of mine with disrespect and harsh words, I will have a negative perception on you before
I meet you. I believe that there are steps we can take to improve our ability to perceive. One of
these steps would be to not believe everything you hear or see online. I think social media puts
a lot of pressure on people especially people around my age. If something is said online people
are going to believe it whether it is true or not. I believe that having a negative perception on
someone based off what social media says is not a real perception because you don’t know if it
is true. Empathy to me is important. I think as a human being you should be able to understand
and share feelings of another. I always encourage my friends and family to express how they
feel to me so I can help them or try to change their thoughts into more positive ones.
