Chapter 1 Journal Prompt
Kaitlyn Gregory
“In Chapter 1, our authors observe that communication is defined by at least five principles.
One of these is that communication can be intentional or unintentional. For this prompt, reflect
a bit on a moment in your life when you communicated something unintentionally to someone
else, and what happened as a result. Or, better yet, reflect on a moment when you intended to
communicate one thing, but accidentally communicated something else. Try to be as detailed
as the space constraint will allow”
First, I’m going to talk about one time when I communicated something unintentionally
to somebody else and what happened as a result. Recently, I was talking to friends about our
plans for the weekend. I was not sure if I was going to go to a party that they were all attending.
I had specific reasons why I did not want to attend the party, but they did not know those
reasons. I did not want to tell them the reasons because it was personal, and I did not want to
talk about it. They asked me if I wanted to go with them to the party and under the pressure
and not knowing what to say I said yes. I immediately regretted it afterwards and I did not know
how to get myself out of this situation that I was in.
As the weekend came and the party was happening, they asked me what time I wanted
to go. I said that I did not want to go anymore because of personal reasons, and this resulted in
an argument. The result of communicating something unintentionally was that they were mad
at me since I did say I was going to go. I did not want to tell them the reasons why which
resulted in them getting even more upset with me.
