● A01 Types Of Long Term Memory
Explicit (Declarative) Memory:
“Knowing that” memories. Include memories that are available in
consciousness. Can be divided into 2 types:
- Episodic Memory: Declarative memory. the collection of
past personal experiences that occurred at a particular time
and place.details of the event; context; and emotions, which
are interwoven. The strength of episodic memories is
determined by the strength of the emotions experienced
when the memory is coded, and a conscious effort is
required to retrieve them.
- Semantic Memory: Declarative memory on associated facts
and concepts that make up our general knowledge of the
world. Start as episodic but progressively lose their
association: only knowledge remains
- Phonological Loop: Holds and processes verbal and
auditory information.
Limited capacity and preserves order of information.
Has 2 subdivisions~ Articulatory process: allows for the repetition of
verbal information to aid with encoding it into memory (inner voice)
Phonological store: Holds speech for 2 secs
Visual Spatial Sketchpad: a short-term storage system for visual and
spatial (relationships between things) information in working memory for
a very short duration.
2 subdivisions: visual cache- visual info store
Inner scribe- spatial relations
Episodic Buffer: A component of working memory where
information in working memory interacts with information in long
term memory (eg. relating information you are processing to a
previous memory).
Temp store that integrates info stores into single memory and sequences
it
