IBC CASE 1: Pascal Juery (CEO of Agfa)
Agfa
Intro
Kodak : company that made camera’s (analoog)
Agfa is the European Kodak (pre digital)
Films inside -> develop -> print
Agfa never went bankrupt
BUT Kodak has a stronger name
Agfa was founded in 1867
Brick and morter company
After 150 years of success, digital disruption = Re inventation of Agfa
World changed and started to digitalize, company business was totally
disrupted
Mastering of photosensitive film : The Afga core competence
Slide :
Chemical competence at the heart of Afga:
The appropriate coating (a complex chemical formulation) on a plastic
substrate
Core competence applied in 3 main downstream markets through a
technology push approach
- Photography – Printing – Radiology/X ray
Business model was centered around leveraging this competence with
focus on consumables
- Even when solution is more comprehensive
Photography was the first market that was developed
X ray was the second market that was developed
Third market that was developed was printing
=> Apply competence in different markets
Everything was fine in the 90s, beginning of 2000s => growing market
But then BOOM, disruption. -> Move to digital for convenience
The digital disruption in the early 2000s
Slide :
Out of 3 traditional film markets totally disrupted by the emergence of digital
only one remains today = X Ray Radiology
Analog photography disappears
X-ray went from film to dry hardcopy film, then computed radiography,
then full digital
Digital radiography has no link anymore with the original core
Agfa leveraged market access and knowhow
Agfa develops digital imaging competences in X-ray and medical fields
Imaging software and imaging IT-solutions
Printing moves to offset, then digital printing
