Title IX Correct Ans-"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded
from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any
education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."
- Government took three years from the original passage of the law to explain its application and
20 years to determine its depth
At the passage of Title IX there were no guidelines as to what compliance meant. The law was
then outlined in 1979 in three areas: Correct Ans-- Scholarships must be substantially
proportional to number of athletes in programs
- Males and females must receive equal treatment in several areas
- The interests of male and female athletes had to be met in equally effective accommodations
Grove City College v. Bell Correct Ans-- 1984 case dealing with the application of Title IX.
One of the biggest setbacks for women since passage in 1972.
- Court found that Title IX was only applicable to those parts of the institution that received
federal funding, thus athletics were excluded. This is known as "Program Specific"
Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987 Correct Ans-reversed the findings in Grove City College
and applied Title IX institution wide
