This document is about different types of learning including: habituation, imprinting, classical conditioning and latent learning as well as all the other types that are included in the specification. This document includes words from the teacher's specification which includes more details as well as the wording the WJEC often like to use in answers. It includes each type of learning, it's description, whether it involves reward/punishment (one of these boxes isn't filled in as i couldn't be sure and didn't want to be incorrect), the person involved e.g. Konrad Lorenz and an example. WJEC Topic on Neurobiology and Behaviour Contains the A01 questions for this topic and the answers including images and labels for diagrams and colour colour coding. Presented in a more colourful way to help it be more memorable as well as pictures to help. Lots of the questions link back to each other helping you to remember it more. Split up clearly into each section. Many of the answers are taken from the WJEC knowledge organisers and the teachers specification notes. These notes are meant to be more concise and contain the answers to 1 mark questions and help you to grab more points from longer questions as a lot of this is wording from the documents of the WJEC but all put together in one.

Note: The limbic system (hypothalamus, thalamus connect
with other areas of the brain including the hippocampus to
form the limbic system. The hippocampus is involved in
learning, reasoning, personality & consolidating
memories into permanent store. The cerebrum
controls voluntary behaviour, leaning, reasoning,
personality & memory.
(Hippocampus in cerebrum)

LEARNING = A relatively permanent change in
behaviour due to past experience.
Learning allows behavioural responses to be modified.
Type of Description Reward Person Example
learning /Punishmen involve

X X
Habituation Leaning to IGNORE a stimuli Aeroplane over
because they’re followed by house, @ start =
neither reward/punishment startled/annoyed
but learn to get use
to it

Imprinting The young of birds & some Attachment Konrad Konrad Lorenz
mammals respond to the 1st to the object Lorenz imprinted young
larger, moving object they = reinforced geese. He became
see/smell/touch/hear by their ‘mother’ &
REWARDS taught them to fly.
e.g. warmth
& food
Classical ASSOCIATIVE BEHAVIOUR (not Pavlov Pavlov trained dogs
Conditioning Association between a punished or to associate a bell
natural & artificial stimulus to rewarded with food, they
bring about the same initially) responded to the
response sound of the bell
with salvation
Operant ASSOCIATIVE BEHAVIOUR REWARD/ BF Skinner studied
Conditioning Association between a PUNISHME Kinner rats, they were
particular behaviour & a NT rewarded for
reward/punishment pressing a lever
with a food pellet
