Direction Athabasca University
, Introduction
The main focus of Lab 2: Kinematics in One Direction is to examine the kinematics of
linear motion through conducting an experiment of a ball rolling at a constant velocity
in addition to the ball in free fall. Once the data is collected, the position of the ball will
be calculated as a function of time using Tracker software.
Materials
Small/medium sized ball
Tape measure
Digital camera
Procedure
As stated in the Lab 2: Kinematics in One Direction lab manual
Part 1: Motion with Uniform Velocity
1. Prepared for the experiment by finding a flat, smooth surface where the ball
could roll freely for at least 60 cm in a straight line.
2. Set up the camera to record sideways digital footage (top view) of the ball’s
horizontal motion.
3. An assistant was used to hold the camera firmly without movement to record the
data.
4. Camera view was aimed perpendicular to the direction of motion of the ball’s
path.
5. Tape measure was laid flat out just behind the starting point of the ball as it was
used as a scaling object.
6. Turned on the video camera to begin recording.
7. Pushed the ball gently to generate a moderate rolling speed in a straight line
in front of the measuring tape.
Part 2: Motion with Uniform Acceleration
1. Located an empty and relatively wide area where the space was clear of any
object or light fixtures.
2. Set up the camera to record sideways digital footage of the ball’s vertical motion.
3. Set experiment up near the wall and attached tape measure vertically to the wall.
4. Ensured the ball was visible against the wall.
5. Camera was sufficient distance from the wall to allow a full view of two meters.
6. Held the ball against the wall without touching the wall approximately two
meters above the floor.
