,A bout the examination
Examination anxiety Tutorial Letter 203 concerns the examination paper. You may be anxious about
the examination because the course has been practical, with little indication of the
type of questions that could come up in an examination. Also, previous
examination papers are not made available - leaving you in the dark as to what to
expect. To help you prepare for the examination we provide a mock paper that is
an example of the kind of questions you can expect. Also keep in mind that the
practical work you did during the year provides a good foundation. If you
completed all the assignments and consulted the resource material to prepare for
the evaluation of your peers’ proposals and articles you should not find the
examination difficult.
The nature of the mock The mock examination paper is an example of the kind of questions you can
examination paper expect in the examination. Although the mock paper provides a close
representation of the examination paper it is not an exact copy of the format of
the examination. The examination is based on an extensive scenario, and includes
a research proposal as well as a research article. The paper requires a fair amount
of reading time. To compensate for the reading time the paper has 80 multiple
choice questions instead of the 100 questions that one could expect in a three-
hour paper. However, it is a good idea to decide beforehand how much time you
are prepared to spend on answering the various sections so that you can pace
yourself realistically.
The date of the The Research Methodology examination is written during October/November.
examination Examination dates are set by the Examination Department and not by the
Department of Psychology. If you require information about examination dates
and centres you have to contact the Examination Department (See the page called,
Communication with Unisa, in Tutorial Letter 101). You will be notified of the
exact examination dates during the latter half of this year.
The nature of the The examination paper consists of 80 multiple choice questions. Please note that
examination: the total of the examination paper (80 marks) is converted automatically to a
- 80 multiple choice percentage (100 marks). Therefore your marks (out of 80) are converted to
questions percentage (a mark out of 100). Also note that you are allowed a maximum of
- 80 marks converted to three hours to complete the paper. This is an open book examination, which
100
means you may take books, tutorial letters and notes into the examination room
- 3 hours to complete
- open book examination and use them when answering the questions. However, bear in mind that you will
not have time to study during the examination. You will only be able to consult
the reference material to confirm detail, look up a formula, or get the steps of a
specific technique. Questions are designed to test whether or not you understand
concepts and principles and are able to apply them. It is therefore a mistake to
think that because you have access to your books during the examination, you
don’t have to prepare for it. On the contrary, you have to work carefully through
the syllabus, making sure you understand everything well.
What your lecturers want!! Students often think that in the examination lecturers are ‘out to get them’, and
that therefore you can expect difficult and tricky questions. This really is not the
case. The examination is not an arena for punishment. Lecturers are much more
interested in students passing their courses rather than failing them. Teaching has
PSY471S / 203 3
, an emotional side that students do not see. Emotionally lecturers share in the
success of their students, and they feel for those who have worked hard, but fail.
Remember Examination date: October/November (The date is set by the
Examination Department and not by the
Department of Psychology)
Duration of paper: 3 hours
Nature of examination: Open book examination consisting of 80 multiple
choice questions
Paper total: 80 marks converted to 100
Wishing you well!! The PSY471S teaching team wishes you all the best for the examination. We also
want to thank your for cooperation during the year.
