1 ABOUT THE EXAMINATION
Examination anxiety Tutorial Letter 203 concerns the examination paper. You are probably anxious
about the examination because the course has been practical and you do not
know what to expect in the examination. To help you prepare for the examination
we provide a mock paper, which is an example of the kind of questions you can
expect. Also keep in mind that the practical work you did during the year
provides a good foundation. If you completed all the assignments and consulted
the resource material when you reviewed your peers’ proposals you should not
find the examination difficult.
The nature of the mock The mock examination paper is an example of the kind of questions you can
examination paper expect in the examination. Although the mock paper provides a close
representation of the examination paper it is not an exact copy of the format of
the examination. The examination is based on an extensive scenario, and
includes a research proposal as well as a research article. The paper requires a
fair amount of reading time. To compensate for the reading time the paper has
80 multiple choice questions instead of the 100 questions that one could expect
in a three-hour paper. However, it is a good idea to decide beforehand how
much time you are prepared to spend on answering the various sections so that
you can pace yourself realistically.
The date of the The Research Methodology examination is written in the October/November
examination examination period. Examination dates are set by the department for Student
Assessment Administration and not by the Department of Psychology. You are
notified of the exact examination dates by the Examination Department. If you
require information about examination dates and centres you have to contact
Student Assessment Administration not the Department of Psychology.
The nature of the The examination paper consists of 80 multiple choice questions. You are
examination: allowed a maximum of three hours to complete the paper. This is an open book
examination, which means you may take books, tutorial letters and notes into the
Open book
examination room and use them when answering the questions. However, bear
80 multiple choice in mind that you will not have time to study during the examination. You will only
questions be able to consult the reference material to confirm detail, look up a formula, or
80 marks converted to 100 get the steps of a specific technique. Questions are designed to test whether or
3 hours to complete not you understand concepts and principles and are able to apply them. It is
therefore a mistake to think that because you have access to your books during
the examination, you don’t have to prepare for it. On the contrary, you have to
work carefully through the syllabus, making sure you understand everything well.
The final mark consists of The final mark (FM) consists of the examination mark (EM) and the year mark
the examination mark and (YM). The total of the examination paper (80 marks) is converted automatically
the year mark to a percentage (100 marks). In other words, your examination mark is a mark
out of 100. The year mark also is a mark out of 100. The examination counts
80% towards the final mark, and the year mark adds 20%. Thus the final mark is
calculated as follows: FM = (0.8 x EM) + (0.2 x YM). However, note that the year
mark does not contribute to the final mark if you obtain an examination mark of
less than 40%. Therefore, if your examination mark is less than 40% the final
mark is equal to the examination mark: FM = EM.
What your lecturers want!! Students often think that in the examination lecturers are ‘out to get them’, and
that therefore you can expect difficult and tricky questions. This is not the case.

, The examination is not an arena for punishment. Lecturers are interested in
students passing their courses, not in failing them. Teaching has an emotional
side that students do not see. Emotionally lecturers share in the success of their
students, and they feel for those who have worked hard, but fail.
Remember Examination date: October/November (The date is set by Student
Assessment Administration and not by the Department
of Psychology)
Duration of paper: 3 hours
Nature of examination: Open book examination consisting of 80 multiple
choice questions
Examination mark: 80 marks converted to 100
Final mark: Final mark = (0.8) x Exam mark + (0.2) x Year mark
Wishing you well!! The HMPYC80/PSY471S teaching team wishes you all the best for the
examination. We also want to thank you for cooperation during the year.
