Description of Procedure
Non-invasive test that measures how well the lungs function. Client will empty their lungs by
breathing out as much air as possible, then take a quick deep breath in. Hold it for 10 seconds
and breathe out. This is repeated several times until complete.
Indications CONSIDERATIONS
Respiratory complaints, dyspnea, monitoring
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
of disease progression, pre-op assessment,
used after inhalation of hazardous waste, Pre: explain what is to be expected
asthma testing Intra: Gather all supplies, reassure patient
during procedure
Post: Praise the child afterwards, give results
to provider
Interpretation of Findings
Client Education
Low levels = poor lung capacity, asthma, lung
disorders Schedule procedure at a time the patient is
not tired, don't schedule during illness
Potential Complications Nursing Interventions
Dizziness, SOB, asthma attack, coughing Have patience with the child, explain
everything in detail, comfort the patient
