CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISES
AN UNHAPPY EMPLOYEE
Review Questions
1. What are the facts of the situation?
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify that the facts are unknown. The report
from the coworker is what “it sounded like.” That is a speculation, not a fact.
2. Develop a clear problem statement of this situation.
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify that the problem is that an employee is
sharing incomplete information.
Critical Thinking Questions
1. Identify alternatives to address this situation. Should you involve others in this?
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify several alternatives including, but not
limited to:
a. do nothing
b. reprimand the coworker
c. confront the new hire
d. calmly share with the new hire what you’ve been told
2. Choose an alternative and defend your actions.
1
, Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify any alternative, so long as they can
defend that action. The important element is having them provide evidence that they followed a
decision-making process and attempted to be objective.
HIPAA REGULATIONS RAISE CONCERN
Review Questions
1. Which GDPR provisions do you think will cause the most concern for NovaTech?
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify that any of the key provisions could pose
a challenge. The right of access might be particularly problematic. In order to provide the data
without a data breach, it is necessary to confirm the identity of the requester. That process will
require careful planning.
2. How will conforming to GDPR requirements impact customers who are not EU citizens?
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify that this will not create any negative
impacts for non-EU citizens. It may, in fact, provide additional privacy protections for them.
Critical Thinking Questions
1. What measures might a business take to ensure that it is compliant with GDPR provisions?
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify that, as noted in the section on “How
Should Companies Protect Data,” bullet 14, companies should regularly perform an audit of their
processes.
2. What actions should a business with EU customers take if it finds it is not compliant with GDPR
provisions?
Solution Guidance: Students should be able to identify that, as with any other compliance issue,
transparency is paramount. NovaTech should be forthcoming about the issue and make
appropriate changes to come into compliance.
VOICING YOUR OPINION ON GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE
Review Questions
1. Does knowing that the ALPRs are paid for by a private company influence your opinion of them?
Solution Guidance: Students will offer a variety of opinions on this question. The important
aspect is that they support their view with a solid justification.
2. Do you believe that companies should be able to collect this information and sell it?
Solution Guidance: Students will offer a variety of opinions on this question. The important
aspect is that they support their view with a solid justification.
Critical Thinking Questions
1. You are planning to attend the next city council meeting and speak on this topic. Which side will
you take? What arguments will you use to support your case?
2
