There are many traditions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Some are
more relevant today than others. One interesting tradition in the Alps is „das
Gipfelkreuz“: the large cross which can be seen on many mountains.
About seven hundred years ago, the first crosses were religious: people wanted
good weather from God. However, their meaning has changed over time. For
rich people in the 19th century, they were a symbol of their power over the
mountain. For men returning from war, a „Gipfelkreuz“ showed that they were
happy to be home again. Today many see them only as cultural symbols. Who
doesn’t want a selfie with the „Gipfelkreuz“ in the background?
