Unit 19: The Internet of Things – Assignment 1
Introduction:
In the first part of the assignment, I will be able to investigate two different IoT systems and services
to also include the principals involved and the characteristics of the systems and services.
Furthermore, I will be examining systems and services that form part of the Internet of Things which
will cover the purpose and applications of systems and services to make up the IoT. Lastly, I will be
mentioning the characteristics of systems/services that make up the Internet of Things.
o IOT devices for Home use:
Purpose of Google Home Assistant:

The purpose and application of this smart device to be used at home is to benefit users or individuals
to use the features offered. For instance, there are many to include such as media, alarms, lights,
thermostats, volume control and much more functions once their voice is clearly recognized. This
device is manufactured and built for users to talk using their voice via the mic and this will cover all
their needs and preferences with a single command.
Furthermore, this device is owned and manufactured by the top known company/organisation
named Google and it uses artificial intelligence to power the home assistant. All information would
be gained from individuals which makes life simpler by saving time to perform tasks and objectives
to meet their expectations out from this smart device.
The Google home assistant smart device has all the functionalities to construct every solution to
deliver excellent service to its users and the ability to make conversational interactions. Also, this
Google home assistant smart device can also control any devices like mobile, laundry, radiator
control, turning on kettle and many more which is an effective feature when using these tools.

Purpose of Nest Smoke Alarm:

The purpose of the IoT device “Nest Smoke Alarm” is to be able to encapsulate or detect whenever
there is smoke and carbon monoxide spread in the rooms and avoid any further smokes to be visible
in residential buildings such as apartments and homes. There is more than one sensor in this IoT
device to help boost what is happening in user’s homes and one of these sensors are called
photoelectric which is aimed to track slow fires. Furthermore, this IoT device can be used as single or
multiple station alarms to keep awareness of detection to prevent any fire alarms to be going off.
Features of Google Home Assistant:
Google Home assistant smart device certainly offers individuals to customise how they would like to
use their Home assistant device. The customisation and personalisation are available to get daily
help and support individual’s personal routines. From this, individuals can simply tap on settings by
using the Google Home application or by making a command from their voice. They can then scroll
down to Google Assistant Services then tapping more settings to select assistant and then routines.
This will allow them to choose specific routines to whichever one is more suitable. Therefore, if
individuals would want to change any settings relating to their routine or even privacy, this smart
device will allow them to make amendments.
Furthermore, Google Home assistant device will enable users to receive real-time answers including
updates on the latest weather, traffic, sports, finance and local businesses. Users will also be
updated on daily information to help with their everyday lives. For instance, asking questions like
“What is the nearest pharmacy?” or “When do they close?”. Google Home Assistant also allows
users to connect to other supported smart devices and control them with voice command.
Additionally, the Google Home Assistant device can connect to thermostats if they have Wi-Fi
capabilities and then used to inform its users what the temperature of the rooms are like. The
Google Home Assistant will enable users to configure thermostats to be able to heat a room since
Google had officially add thermostat humidity ambient to the temperature setting trait for the
thermostat. There is also an application that can link the assistant smart device to control everything
all in one and the name of the application is called SmartThings.
