● DICK-READ child birth method - ANS - progressive relaxation technique with no analgesics, and self
hypnosis.



BRADLEY - childbirth method - ANS labor coached relaxation exercises

stress control of environment to help endure labor, room dimly lit, no noise, no analgesics.



LEBOYER - child birth method - ANS warm water bath, silence and darkness, and wait to cut the umbilical
cord until you lay the baby on the moms abdomen.



● LAMAZE - childbirth method - ANS generalized relaxation techniques, it uses breathing and focusing
techniques.



What does induction mean? - ANS ➢ An attempt to start labor at a time other than when it begins
spontaneously



Ways to induce - ANS Amniotomy, Prostaglandin gel, Oxytocin stimulation , Misoprostol (cytotec)



AMNIOTOMY - ANS - BREAK THE AMNIOTIC SACK.

● LIGHTENING sign of impending labor - ANS - FETUS SEEMS TO HAVE SETTLED OR DROPPED INTO THE
PELVIS

As early as 2 weeks prior to labor



SEEPAGE OR SUDDEN OUTFLOW OF FLUID sign of impending labor - ANS could be urine or amniotic
fluid), INDICATING RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES.

➢ CHORIOAMNIONITIS - in labor - ANS intraamniotic infection where there's inflammation of the
membranes and the chorion of the placenta, and this is due to the membranes being ruptured.



FERN TEST impending labor - ANS - provides evidence of the presence of amniotic fluid(microscope is
used)

Vaginal secretions are inspected under a microscope for the fern pattern or crystallization

Vaginal secretions do not show the fern pattern



BLOODY SHOW - ANS - increase in the amount of vaginal discharge and a blood tinged mucus(MUCUS
PLUG).



BRAXTON HICKS CONTRACTIONS - ANS ARE IRREGULAR TIGHTENING OF THE PREGNANT UTERUS(they
begin in the 1st trimester and increase in frequency, duration and intensity as the pregnancy progresses)



. DOES NOT DILATE THE CERVIX.



➢ True labor: - ANS REGULAR, RHYTHMIC CONTRACTIONS, CAUSE PROGRESSIVE DILATION AND
EFFACEMENT, GET STRONGER WITH WALKING, bloody show
