BIOS 251 Week 6 Discussion Bone Tissue – Graded An A+ Week 6 Discussion: Bone Tissue Required Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity: • Textbook reading • Lesson • Minimum of 1 scholarly source In your reference for this assignment, be sure to include both your text/class materials AND your outside reading(s). Initial Post Instructions In this unit, you are learning about anatomy and physiology of the skeletal system as well as similarities and differences between the male and female skeletal system. In your initial post, address one of the following topics: Describe functions of the skeletal system. Compare and contrast the components that make up the axial and appendicular skeleton. Distinguish the structural differences between the male and female skeleton. Discuss the various disorders of the skeletal system, their causes, symptoms, prognosis and treatment. Follow-up Post Instructions Response to at least one peer or the instructor. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification. Answer A female’s skeleton is usually much smoother and less knobby than a male’s. A male’s skeleton is usually thicker, rougher and appears bumpier. Due to the fact that males have larger muscles and therefore their skeletons require; a male’s skull is usually bigger and bumpier than a female’s. Also anatomical differences in: Frontal brow, Eye orbits, Lower jaw, Shape of chin. Examination of the pelvis is the easiest method to determine the sex of a skeleton (Saladin, 2020). There are several diagnostic criteria for differentiating a male from a female pelvis: The female pelvis is larger and broader than the male pelvis, which is taller (owing to a higher iliac crest), narrower, and more compact. The distance between the ischium bones is small in males. This causes the sides of the male pelvis to converge from the inlet to the outlet, whereas the sides of the female pelvis are wider apart. This results in the female inlet being large and oval in shape, while the male inlet is more heart shaped (Saladin, 2020). The angle between the inferior pubic rami is acute (70 degrees) in men, but obtuse (90–100 degrees) in women. Accordingly, the angle is called the subpubic angle in men and pubic arch in women. The greater sciatic notch is wider in females. The ischial spines and tuberosities are heavier and project farther into the pelvic cavity in males. The male sacrum is long, narrow, straighter, and has a pronounced sacral promontory. The female sacrum is shorter, wider, more curved posteriorly, and has a less pronounced promontory. The acetabula are wider apart and face more medially in females than in males. This change in the angle of the femoral head gives the female gait its characteristic swinging of hips. The femur (thigh bone) of a male is thicker than a females. The angle of the femur in relation to the pelvis is greater in females than males.
