Ectopic Pregnancy
● Definition: An ectopic pregnancy occurs when an embryo develops abnormally outside the uterus,
usually in the fallopian tube. This can be dangerous because when this occurs, this can cause an
abdominal hemorrhage inside a pregnant woman’s abdomen, leading to death. This is also dangerous for
the baby, as the mom has a high chance of miscarriage when this occurs.
● Risk Factors
○ Acute condition- developed origin
○ Structural
■ Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
■ Pregnancy
■ Abruptio placenta
■ Placenta previa
● Signs and Symptoms
○ Vaginal bleeding
○ Missed menstrual cycle
○ Shock
● Field Treatment
○ Attempt to soak up the blood by placing sterile pads over the vagina
○ Treat for shock
■ High flow oxygen via nonrebreather mask
■ Blanket
■ Position of comfort
○ Rapid transport
○ Treat the mother AND the baby (two patients)
Bacterial Vaginosis
● Definition: This infection is the most common vaginal infection between the ages of 15-44. This occurs
when the normal bacteria in the vagina are replaced by an overgrowth of another kind of bacteria.
● Signs & Symptoms
○ Vaginal itching, burning and pain
○ “Fishy” foul smelling discharge
● Complications
○ Serious infections
○ Pelvic inflammatory disease
● Field Treatment
○ Maintain patient privacy
○ Rapid transport
