PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
essential in the production of DNA and - megaloblastic (macrocytic) anemia.
erythropoieis (RBC, WBC, and platelets). - folate deÞciency (alcoholism).
- prevent neural tube defects in developing
fetus.
Complications Medication Administration
- increased yellowing of urine. - give orally (preferable),
- masks B12 deÞciency in high doses. subcutaneously, IM, or IV.
- increased risk of developing colorectal or prostate cancer - check vitamin B12 levels to
conÞrm absence of B12 deÞciency.
(long-term use).
- obtain baseline serum folate, Hgb,
Hct, RBC, and reticulocyte count
and monitor periodically thereafter.
Hct should start to improve within 2
weeks.
Contraindications/Precautions
- vitamin B12 deÞciency (after initial stabilization).

- encourage clients to eat a diet high in
folic acid.
- monitor for signs of megaloblastic
anemia.
Interactions - monitor plasma folic acid levels,
- folic acid therapy can mask the symptoms of B12 deÞciency; hemoglobin, hematocrit, and
reticulocyte count before and
clients who have a B12 deÞciency must take adequate doses of
periodically during therapy.

- oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, or methotrexate may
cause manifestations of folic acid deÞciency, but will not be

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
- encourage clients to eat a diet high in
