Goossens and Mazursky experience model

Goossens and Mazursky developed in 1992 a scheme in which the relationship between
expectations , information , perception , satisfaction and behavioural intentions were mapped .
With that in mind Goossens and Mazursky created an experience model.

The model is split into three phases

• The pre-exposure
• The direct exposure
• The post-exposure

Below I will briefly explain each phase.

The pre - exposure: Pre - exposure is the phase prior to the actual participation of the leisure
activity. In that phase we create an image of what the activity will be like. We orientated
ourselves therefore we make use of existing information ( personal experience ), and we
gather additional information by reading brochures or by questioning people in the area about
their experiences with that specific leisure activity . in this phase we create certain
expectations , which are often very vague and not always realistic.

The direct exposure: The direct exposure involves the actual participation in leisure
activities . Experience is linked to this phase . The emotions that are triggered at the time of
participation have much to do with the experience.

The post - exposure: Post- exposure is the stage after participation . After participating the
evaluation of leisure activity takes place . The expectations that previously has been set, are
compared with the actual experience. If the activity is lower than expected or higher than
expected , we speak of discomfort . When the event was like they expected, we speak of
confirmation , there has been a confirmation of expectations . There is satisfaction . In such
cases, the intention for a repeat visit or a visit to something similar increases. We store this
experience in our memory and when we are going to orient on a leisure activity such an
experience can be of an decisive nature. Discomfort will lead to dissatisfaction and this
negative experience, is also stored in the memory . Only often at a much higher profile than
the positive experience . The chance that we will choose the same leisure activity again is low
.
