Characteristics
Virtual movement
Influenced by Pointilism (When dots of complimentary colours were put next together and
the eye would blend them together)
Creates optical ambiguity and physical disorientation through the repetition of shapes and
colours
Explores limitations of the human eye
Was based off of Illusions
Are made with formal structure on a 2D rectangular surface
All works are abstract
Geometric shapes
Machine-like and precise application of paint
Visual effect is reliant on shapes and colour that create rhythms and patterns
Bridget Riley - Current
o Based off of what Riley saw in nature- representative of ripples on the surface of a
stream
o The goal was to create an active space between the surface of the canvas and the
spectator
o Movement is activated by the juxtaposition of the black and white
o The equal distances between the positive and negative spaces create an illusion of
movement
o Formal elements are carefully planned
