1. Growth: is quantifiable: the number of cells increases = gain in
body weight or body party
Indicators: height, weight, teeth, skeletal, structures, sexual
characteristics
2. Development: qualitative: difficult to measure in exact units; change
from simple to complex = refinement
Maturation allows for the emergence of persona, behavioral, or adult-like
features
3. Describe the scope of Growth & Development: Growth and
development takes place throughout the lifespan and are progressive

, and typically predictable. Tra- ditional stages of growth and
development have been identified according to age group: embryologic,
infant, toddler, preschool, school age, adolescent, young adult, adult,
middle age, and older adult. The extent to which growth and
development influences a person is classified as expected, delayed, or
advanced development within traditional stages.
4. Risk Factors of Growth and Development: Challenges with
growth and devel- opment occur in all social classes, in all ethnic
groups, and across all ages. Typically, growth and development are at
risk of being adversely affected during stages of rapid growth and
change, notably the embryologic, infant, toddler, preschool, school age,
and adolescent stages.
