Butt Plate - ANSWER-A cap on the rear of the stock. The part of the stock to be placed
in the contact with the shoulder when shooting
Stock - ANSWER-The part to the rear of the action, by which the weapon is grasped by
the strong hand. Also, call the buttstock.
Receiver - ANSWER-The part of which the barrel, magazine and trigger assemblies are
attached. Considered the main feature of the weapon it must be serially numbered by
the manufacturer.
Breach Block - ANSWER-Housed within the receiver, it is that part that locks the
shotshell into the barrel chamber. It serves the same general function as the bolt of a
bolt action rifle.
Loading Port - ANSWER-That portion under the receiver by which a magazine-fed
shotgun s designed to be loaded.
Ejection Port - ANSWER-That cutout portion of the receiver through which shotshells or
fired hulls are ejected.
Trigger Guard - ANSWER-The enclosure on the underside of the receiver, forward of
the stocks pistol handgrip, which provides some protection against accidental
discharges.
Trigger - ANSWER-The small lever which protrudes downward from the receiver, and
inside the trigger guard. When pulled, the trigger starts the sequence of the action
designed to fire the shotshell.
Safety - ANSWER-That feature which, when activated, prevents the weapon from being
fired. It is accessible to either the shooter's thumb or trigger finger, depending on the
design.
Magazine - ANSWER-A tubular housing for shotshells, attached to the forward end of
the receiver and located under the barrel.
Fore-End - ANSWER-The forward grip, grasped by the shooter's non-gun hand and is
usually made of the same material as the stock. On pump-action weapons, it is used to
cycle the action through the loading and unloading sequences
Sights - ANSWER-Either a bead on the top of the muzzle end of the barrel, to be
aligned with the top of the receiver, or a front sight assembly consisting of a front sight
