AF-A(A) - Answers -Flight Attendant Position ‐ assigned to the forward section of the
aircraft.
ABP - Answers -Able Bodied Person, a passenger that will assist the FA with various
duties in the event of an emergency.
AED - Answers -Automated External Defibrillator— designed to treat passengers who
are experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
ATC - Answers -Air Traffic Control
AFT - Answers -The rear portion of the aircraft
Air Cargo - Answers -Air cargo is any mail, freight or express moving by air
Aircraft Left - Answers -The left side of the aircraft as you are in the cabin facing the
cockpit. The captain's seat is on the
aircraft left.
Aircraft Right - Answers -The right side of the aircraft as you are in the cabin facing the
cockpit. The first officer's seat is on
the aircraft right.
B-FA (B) - Answers -Flight Attendant Position ‐ assigned to the aft section of the aircraft
Ballast - Answers -Every aircraft must be balanced in order to fly properly. Sometimes
ballast (such as bags of sand or gravel)
is required to be placed on the aircraft in order to balance it.
Bulkhead - Answers -An upright partition separating compartments
Cabin - Answers -Area inside the aircraft where the passengers sit
CA/ CPT (Captain) - Answers -Pilot ultimately in charge of the aircraft. Responsible for
First Officer and Flight Attendant(s).
Carrier - Answers -A term used interchangeably with airline. Sometimes referred to as
certificate referring to the airline's
operating certificate. Example: The Republic certificate.

Connecting Flight - Answers -A flight routing which has a stop between the originating
city and destination city where a change of aircraft.

Crosswind - Answers -Wind blowing at an angle to the line of flight of an aircraft at any
given direction. Severe cross winds make it difficult for an aircraft to take off or land.
Deadheading - Answers -Travel completed on company aircraft by on duty crew
members traveling to or from the assignment who are not part of the working crew (in a
passenger)
Direct Flight - Answers -A flight that involves one or more scheduled stops enroute
between origin and destination without a change of flight numbers. Also known as a thru
flight. (Customers will often say direct but mean non stop)

emergency situation.
