Hardy Weinberg summary notes
21 February 2021 12:00
Population- A group of organisms of the same species
In the same location
At the same time
That can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Gene Pool - all the alleles of all the genes of all the
individuals in a population at a given time
Allele Frequency- Number of times an allele occurs
within a gene pool
Usually expressed as a % or a number between 0 and 1
Assumptions of Hardy Weinberg- also limitations
Hardy Weinberg Equation- genetic variation in a
population will remain constant from one generation to
the next in the absence of disturbing factors (as above)
p: probability of homozygous dominant allele
q : probability of homozygous recessive allele
P + q = 1 (because only two alleles, so probability of one
plus other must be 1, 100%)
- 4 arrangements of the two alleles
- Probability of all four added must = 1
