● EEG is the collective activity of neurons in the cortex varies in frequency during different
states of consciousness
○ EEG is Electro-Encephalo-Gram for brain activity; EMG is Electro-myo-gram for
muscle activity; EOG is electro-oculo-gram for eye movements
● NREM (75%) vs. REM (25%)
● Babies have 80% of REM; old people have shorter sleep in general, less REM (5 cycles
normally, in older people it shrinks; kinda links to dementia)
● Circadian rhythm: suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in hypothalamus, it sends information
to the pineal gland; light-entraining; melatonin (pineal gland, posterior at the back of the
midbrain)
● Why do we sleep? – memory processing, recuperation/cleaning or evolutionary
adaptation, or all of them; if you do not sleep, you will die
● In order to learn you need to clear out your hippocampus; need to properly sleep in order
to learn proficiently; hippocampus needs to be a clean slate; need to sleep before to learn
and after to actually get the information and apply/memorize it; file replay happens
during slow wave sleep
● If you go sleep deprived to a vaccination, it won’t work well enough if you did have
enough sleep; immune system will have a better response
