Description of Skill
Oxygen Therapy is a treatment that delivers oxygen and increases the amount of oxygen in your lungs and thus in
your blood. Oxygen therapy is received by: nasal cannula, simple mask, partial rebreather mask, nonrebreather
mask, or venturi mask. (Taylor et al., p. 1511)
Indications CONSIDERATIONS
. Tachypnea
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
. Anxiety or confusion
. Pale Skin . Pre: Assess the patients vitals to receive
. Bradycardia baseline information
. Hypoxemia . Intra: Position the patient in Fowler's
. Hypotension position to help in lung expansion
. Hypoxia . Post: Assess patient receiving oxygen
frequently for any changes in their condition
. Assess flow rate of oxygen
. Monitor for respiratory depression

Client Education
. Improved O2 saturation
. Explain all procedures and processes
. More effective breathing
. Do not smoke while connected to oxygen
. Assess respirations
. Keep away from flammables/open flames
. Use oxygen as prescribed for the oxygen
flow rate
Potential Complications Nursing Interventions
. Fire hazard . Closely monitor the flow rate to ensure
accurate concentration of oxygen
. Lung damage / disease
. Monitor respiratory rate and pulse
. Sinus Damage
. Promote repositioning and deep breathing
. Oxygen toxicity
. Notify physician of any changes
