Unit 31 Computer Aided Manufacturing Assignment 2

After the last assignment XYZ engineering are still unsure if they should invest in CAD &
CAM; I will explain to the board of directors how CAD & CAM are integrated & the
importance of stimulation & modelling of products. XYZ engineering use old-fashioned,
inefficient methods to produce engine parts. A move to CAD & CAM would be very
beneficial to this business as profits have plateaued & the directors are unsure as to what
direction the business should take; I will need to show the reasons behind the business
moving in this direction.

Firstly, I have decided to create a
trophy in solid works & I will
explain every step I took to get to
my finalised design. Below is an
image of what I began my first part
as; I started by sketching an
80mmx80mm square, then
extruding it by 10mm, & this
whole part will be known as my
‘Trophy Base’.

Next, I drew 3 centre lines & drew a triangle 30mm
away from the corners of the square (as shown
below). I drew the triangle at the bottom first, which
was 20mmx10mm; once this was accomplished, I
mirrored the shape by the horizontal centreline & the
diagonal line (with the mirrored shape from the
diagonal line, I used that shape & mirrored with the
vertical line to give me the triangle on the left).
Furthermore, on one of the triangles, I sketched a
centreline to find the midpoint as I can then draw a
circle of radius 5 using the smart dimension tool;
once I had done this, I mirrored the circle the same
way as I did with the triangle.

Onto the next part, I sketched 2 shapes
(a triangle & a rhombus) & mirrored
them with the diagonal centrelines. The
rhombus has a dimension of
10mmx10mm & is exactly 10mm away
from the 2 closest sides of the square;
similarly, with the triangle, except that
the dimensions of this was
21.55mmx21.55mm with the
hypotenuse being 30.45mm
