Therapeutic Class: Antibiotic
Identify other medications in this tetracycline, minocycline, tigecycline
class?
Pathophysiology/Pharmacology Exerts a bacteriostatic effect against a
wide variety of gram-positive and gram-
negative organisms. Doxycycline is more
lipophilic than other tetracyclines,
which allows it to pass more easily
through the bacterial lipid bilayer,
where it binds reversibly to 30S
ribosomal subunits. Bound doxycycline
blocks the binding of aminoacyl transfer
RNA to messenger RNA, thus inhibiting
bacterial protein synthesis
Indications To treat inhalation anthrax post
exposure
To treat inflammatory lesions of rosacea
To treat endocervical, rectal, and
urethral infections caused by
Chlamydia trachomatis
To prevent malaria
To treat all other infections caused by
susceptible organisms
Is there any off label use? May be used to treat Anaplasmosis or
Ehrlichiosis
