PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
Blocks the tonic phase of nociception -Treats seizures by decreasing abnormal
induced by formalin and carrageenan. excitement in the brain
Inhibits the rapid action firing of neuron -Treat moderate to severe primary restless leg
associated w/ seizures syndrome
Complications Medication Administration
- Ataxia, dizziness, fatigue, depression PO: Available forms
- Diplopia, pharyngitis, CNS tumors
-Leukopenia, intracranial hemorrhage, apnea -Capsules:100-400mg
-Hypoglycemia, acute renal failure, SJS, anaphylaxis -Tablets 100mg-800
-Oral solution 250mg/5ml
-Prescribes: 300mg-1600 once daily
Contraindications/Precautions
-Hypersensitivity to gabapentin or its components
-May cause life-threatening and fatal respiratory depression in
older adults and in patients with respiratory risk factors Nursing Interventions
-Pregnancy -Monitor VS, renal function
Closely monitor pt for changes in
behavior indicating worsening of
suicidal thoughts or behavior or
depression
Interactions
-Alcohol, CNS depressants
-Antacids, opioid analgesics (hydrocodone)
Client Education
-Advise patient not to stop drug
abruptly
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Instruct patient to take first dose at
-Decrease seizure activity bedtime to minimize adverse
-Restless leg syndrome treated reactions
-Inform pt of side effects
-Do not use alcohol
