CHEM 280L

Laboratory Pre-Lab
Experiment 10: Chemical Reactions and Equations

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to learn about the chemical reactions between certain metals
and nonmetals. Also, you will be learning how to balance chemical equations and identify the
type of chemical reaction that occurs.

Chemicals/Hazards:
 Magnesium
 Oxygen
 Zinc
 Copper (II) Sulfate
 Sodium Carbonate

Materials:
 Goggles  Test Tube Rack
 Lab Coat  Graduated Cylinder
 Bunsen Burner  Matches or Wood Splints
 Test Tubes  Tongs

Methods:
Part A – Magnesium and Oxygen:
 We will be recording the initial appearance of a strip of magnesium ribbon before and after
heat has been applied to it via a Bunsen Burner.
 Then, we will observe for any chemical reactions. (Do not look directly at the flame when the
magnesium is burning!)
 Next, if a chemical reaction occurs, we will need to balance the chemical equation while
adding coefficients whenever it is needed.
 Once it has been balanced, we will identify and record the type of chemical reaction that
occurred.

Part B – Zinc and Copper (II) Sulfate:
 For part B, we will be using a small graduated cylinder along with two test tubes; the test
tubes will be securely sitting in a test tube rack once the solution is added. With the
supplies properly set up in front of us, we will measure 3 mL of Copper (II) Sulfate
[CuSO4 (aq)] and pour it into one of the test tubes, then place it in the test tube rack.
 Then, we’ll obtain a piece of zinc metal.
 Next, we’ll observe and record the initial appearance of both CuSO4 (aq) and the piece of
zinc metal.
 Moving forward, we’ll add the piece of zinc metal into the test tube containing the
CuSO4 solution and observe for any chemical reactions.
 After 30 minutes, we’ll separate the zinc metal and CuSO4 (aq) by pouring the solution
into the second test tube, then observe and record their appearances.
 Now, we will need to balance the chemical equation and identify the type of reaction that
occurred.
