SUMMARY:
The story begins with Esperanza revealing that she is going to die and that a
man is going to murder her mercilessly. He is enraged and determined on
killing her. The story jumps back 3 years earlier. Esperanza has just left
Nicaragua and looks back at her town reminiscing on if she will ever return.
She was a park ranger and she had taken a liking to a toucan. She says her
goodbyes to the bird. She arrives at the airport and she maneuvers she puts
on a hat, scarf and gloves. She arrives in Paris and is overwhelmed by her
surroundings. She is absolutely freezing as it is the middle of winter. She
debates on what mode of transport to take and finally hops on a bus.
She sees the Pyrenees again and their blue aura gives her a rush of warmth.
She was approaching the village and grew nervous as she was seeing her
parents who she had not written too. She sees her mother at the front of the
house with beautiful hair and a haunted look unlike her father who is a very
soft man. She runs into her mother’s arms and they hug. They rejoice and
everything returns back as if she had never left.
She gets a job as an agent of the National Hunting and Wildlife Office in
Ariège. She did her job very well as she was overqualified. Things were good
for the city in France except for the bodies of the dead bears. The bear had
been killed but there was no information on the impacts or the type of weapon
used. The state fires a complaint to scare the hunters. The killer risked owing
the state 150,000 euros and 3 years in prison. The newspapers and the
tabloids wrote about it describing the circumstances of the ordeal.
Esperanza did not like it, it was all politics. She believed the real worry was
that there was a killer still on the loose. She gets forcefully paired with Marc
Vidal to help her in the investigation. This was something that upset her as
she was able to work solo in Nicaragua. He was a policeman who lied in
Guyane. He lived in a villa by the sea and found this job more peaceful than
having to deal with drugs and prostitutes. He loved physical challenges.
In February he meets a Brazilian woman in a bar that catches his eye. They
made love and he learns that she has 2 children. Things got complicated
when he found out she had taken on a second lover (a Brazilian man).
Marc was adored by the kids even one of them calling him papa.
