Circuit Switched - main telephony for communication
Packet Switched - uses packets, doesn't need a single physical connection
like Circuit
Virtual circuits
PVC - Permanent Virtual Circuit
o Like a dedicated leased line - logical circuit always exists and is
waiting for the customer to send data
SVC - Switches Virtual Circuit
o More like shortwave radio or ham radio - must tune the
transmitter and receiver to the new frequency every time you
want to communicate with someone
WAN are used to connect distant networks, nodes or individual devices
together
Dedicated Line - always on
Non-dedicated requires a connections to be established before data
transmission can happen
ISDN
Basic Rate Interface - BRI - offers customers a connection with 2 B
channels and 1 D
o B channels support 64 Kbps and used for data transmission
o D channel is used for call establishment, management, and
teardown - bandwidth of 16 Kbps
Primary Rate Interface PRI
o Offers customers a connection with multiple 64 Kbps B channels
- 2 to 23 of them and a single D channel at 64 Kbps
o PRI can go from 192 Kbps to 1.544 Mbps
