PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
*enhances inhibitory effects of *tx for anxiety, depression, panic disorder,
gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain; this pre-op anxiety
CNA depressant action produces the
anxiolytic effect
Complications Medication Administration
*early dicontinuation or failure to titrate can result in irritability, *PO (ER, IR, orally
insomnia, tremors, muscle cramps, diaphoresis, seizures, and disintegrating)
vomiting.
*dosage varies for hepatic
*OD s/s drowsiness, confusion, impaired reflexes, coma, rarely blood
dyscrasias may occur. impairment
*antidote for OD is flumazenil
Contraindications/Precautions
*contraindicated for hypersensitivity, acure narrow
angle-closure galcoma
*precautions: renal/hepatic impairment, family hx for urate Nursing Interventions
neuropathy, obesity *assess degree of anxiety,
drowsiness, dizziness
*assess motor/autonomic
responses
*fall precautions
Interactions *monitor respiratory and
*smoking decreases effectiveness cardiovascular status
*drugs: CNS depressants can increase CNA depression (alcohol, *CBC periodically
morphine, zopidem); others: clarithromycin, carbamazepine
*natural/herbal: chamomile, valerian root, st. john's wort, grapefruit

*drowsiness gradually disappears
*avoid tasks that require alertness until
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness response to drug is determined
*sour candy may relieve dry mouth
*if drug is effective, client's facial expression will be calm, *abstain from other drugs/supplements
decreased restlessness, decreased or no insomnia unless MD approved their use
*long-term therapy: LFT/kidney function tests, CBC
