Advocacy
Providing patients with the information they need to make decisions and supports the
patients in whatever decisions they make
Autonomy
Autonomy refers to a person's independence. Represents an agreement to respect a
patient's right to determine a course of action. For example, before surgery a patient
is required to sign a consent form. The purpose of the consent is to ensure in writing
that the health care team respects the patient's independence by obtaining his or her
permission to proceed. Respect for autonomy becomes complicated when the patient is
a child or when he or she is cognitively impaired by disease, age, or trauma. Although
the health care team turns to whoever is identified as legally responsible for the
patient, the ethical goal remains to try to determine the best interests of the patient
from the patient's point of view.
Patient's Bill of Rights
Informs patients about what they should expect during their hospital stay
Patient Self-Determination Act
Requires federally funded hospitals to inform adult patients in writing about their
rights to make treatment choices ask make sure the patient has a living will or power
of attorney.
Responsibility
the duties and activities that an individual is employed to perform. A professional
nurse's responsibili ties in a given role are outlined in a position description describing
the nurse's duties in client care and in participating as a member of the nursing unit.

Accountability
refers to liability or individuals being answerable for their actions. It involves follow-
up and a reflective analysis of one's decisions to evaluate their effectiveness.
Decentralized Decision Making
Decisions made at the staff level.
Advantages - Increased morale and improved interpersonal relationships among staff. Staff
members feel more important and are more willing to contribute. Also promotes creativity in
problem solving.
Collaborative Care
Nurses collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to plan, provide, and
evaluate patient care.
The primary goal of each member of the healthcare team is to promote and restore health.
Example: Nurse consults with the dietitian for a patient who is not eating well or who needs to
lose weight.
Physicians
primarily responsible for the diagnosis of illness and the medical or surgical tx of that
illness
