Engineering Mechanics: Statics
EXAM REVISION

a) Statics - ANS-a science which deals with the action of forces on bodies, the forces being so
arranged that they are in equilibrium.

b) Force - ANS-a pull or push, which acting on a body changes or tends to change, the state of rest
or uniform motion of the body. Measured in Newton (N).

c) Force System - ANS-a number of forces acting on a body.

d) Coplanar Forces - ANS-the forces acting on a body lying in the same plane.

e) Collinear Forces - ANS-the coplanar forces having a common line of action.

f) Concurrent Forces - ANS-the system of forces intersecting at a common point.

g) Parallel Forces - ANS-those forces having parallel lines of action.

h) Principle of Transmissibility of a Force - ANS-states that if a force acts at any point of a rigid body
it may be considered to act at any other point in its line of action provided the point is rigidly
connected with the body.

i) Parallelogram Law of Forces - ANS-states that if two forces acting at a point be represented in
magnitude and direction by the adjacent sides of a parallelogram, their resultant is represented
in magnitude and direction by the diagonal of the parallelogram passing through that point.

j) Resultant Formula - ANS-R = √(P² + Q² + 2PQcosα)

k) Angle at which Resultant Acts Formula - ANS-θ = tan⁻¹(Qsinα/P+Qcosα)
