Social media seriously harms young people

Social media are a crucial part of young people's lives. Social media is an online
platform that provides young people with the opportunity to communicate, share
content, and stay connected with friends, family, and the world around them. Social
media can also pose risks, such as online bullying, which negatively influences the
mental health of young people. This essay aims to show that social media negatively
influences young people.

Firstly, Social media harms young people by causing depression. The number of
youths dealing with depression and anxiety has increased by almost 30 percent in
recent years. Depression also leads to eating disorders. For example, when a
teenage girl scrolls through Instagram and sees an anorexia commercial. A survey
by the company Meta found that 14% of teenage girls say seeing photos of perfect
bodies on Instagram makes eating disorders worse. And now Meta is planning to
make a kid’s version.

Secondly, Is that Social media can increase bullying behavior. Students can be
victims of bullying such as receiving hateful comments. That's what happened to
Zane. The students in Zoom class found Zane's TikTok account. They started typing
hate comments about Zane being ugly. It made him feel terrible; he cried for a few
days after it happened, but the hateful comments continued.

Thirdly, a negative influence if you use the phone before going to sleep. The
research found that teens who use smartphones around bedtime get less sleep and
have poorer sleep quality than children without access. Dr.Twenge wants parents to
tell their children that smartphones are not allowed in the bedroom.

In conclusion, the use of social media can lead to an increase in anxiety and
depression symptoms in students. Social media can promote bullying behavior.
Students can become victims of cyberbullying, such as receiving hateful comments
or threats. Social media use can lead to sleep problems as students disrupt their
sleep routines. This is why I think Social media should be banned.
