major functions of nonverbal messages:

Complimenting - Answers-reinforces, clarifies, or adds to verbal messages. Ex:I love
you, and then you embrace. I hate you, and then you slap.

Repeating - Answers-serves function of repeating, reflecting, restating the verbal
message. It can stand alone if verbal isn't there. Ex: indicating there are two for dinner
by holding up fingers as you say it.

Contradicting - Answers-contradicts message. Ex: sarcasm

Accenting - Answers-a message that reinforces. Don't need nonverbal messages but it
means even more. Ex: a long pause before bad news. It's basically additional messages
to reinforce it.

Regulating - Answers-helps to regulate or direct the flow of a verbal message. Like
raising your hand for a question. A lot of socially inept people are this for some reason.

Substituting - Answers-nonverbal message takes place of verbal. Ie: waving instead of
saying hi, or glaring at a remark. So, it speaks for itself. Very strong and one we can
understand.
